(Back to top)What do I need to register my car?
- New to town? Click here.
- New vehicle/new plates? If it was a private sale (not through a dealer), bring in the Bill of Sale or Title. All people named as buyers must be present to sign the paperwork. If you purchased through a dealer, bring in the Town Clerk’s copy of the Application for Title that the dealer filled out for you. Please also bring your photo ID.
- New vehicle/old plates? Follow the steps for a new vehicle with new plates. If you want to use the registration/plates from a vehicle you no longer have, you need to bring the old registration with you (you do not need to bring the license plates). If you can’t find that registration, we can provide one for you to use for the transfer, but the State requires us to charge $15 for it. This will allow us to apply whatever credit is left on the old registration to your new registration.
- Renewing a registration? Please bring either your old registration(s) or the renewal notice you are sent each year, and your photo ID.
