Purgatory Falls Trails Are Open - No Roadside Parking
At their June 2, 2021 meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted to reopen access to the Purgatory Falls Trail. It has been a long journey, and we are grateful that conditions have improved so that the Falls can be reopened safely. The privilege of enjoying this local treasure has been deeply missed.
Please keep in mind that with privilege comes responsibility, and we are counting on the public to utilize the Falls in a manner that is safety-conscious and responsible.
We ask that visitors to the Falls be mindful that parking is limited to the parking lot only. The 'No Parking' zone on both sides of Purgatory Road remains in place and any vehicles parked in violation within this zone will be towed at the owner's expense.*
This road provides vital emergency service access to Lyndeborough, Milford, and Mont Vernon and parking congestion impedes firetrucks and ambulances from being able to get through during an emergency. Also, parking in private driveways is prohibited and private property must be respected. If you have a large group that wishes to hike together we strongly encourage visitors to make arrangements to carpool so that parking space efficiency can be maximized.
We encourage visitors to 'Pack It In, Pack It Out' with their trash and any other discarded items. During the pandemic the MEMO Foundation volunteered to help clean-up the trail and through their tireless efforts several dump truck loads of trash and debris were removed. Now that the Falls have been reopened it is our hope that every effort will be made to maintain the area's natural beauty.

Once again, our heartfelt thanks go out to the members of the MEMO Foundation, without your support we would not have reached the milestone opportunity to reopen.
It has been a long journey and we are hoping that our renewed sense of appreciation and community will help all of us remember just how quickly something that is precious can be lost. We hope to keep the Falls open for all to enjoy, however, if trail conditions degrade again the privilege of enjoying this magnificent setting could be lost yet again.

*Violators of this directive will be guilty of criminal trespass in accordance with NH State statutes. Additionally, parking a vehicle in a no parking zone shall result in vehicles being towed at the owner’s expense.
